The internet and search engine optimization (SEO) are both about presenting information to people. By optimizing how your data appears in search results, search engine optimization aims to attract potential customers’ attention.

When searching for and finding information, Google understands how important it is to ensure that users have a positive experience. Throughout the years, they have developed best practices in how websites can rank more highly on search engine results pages from a technical standpoint. Among other things, Google requires websites to use SSL certificates to secure the connection between the client’s browser and the site.

In addition to its usual metrics, Google is tracking the speed of a site to see if it is providing a satisfactory user experience. These metrics, known as Core Web Vitals, can help you determine whether your website is performing as it should, as well as identify weaknesses that might be harming your ranking.

How Do Core Web Vitals Work?

These three Core Web Vitals contribute to the experience that users have on your site:

  • The FID (First Input Delay) – A brief pause occurs between your browser request and the time it takes the server to send your browser the data. The FID is the brief moment when the request is received by the server, and Google generally considers an FID time under 100 milliseconds good, and anything over 300 milliseconds poor.
  • The Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) – Whenever you visit a website in your browser, the browser interprets the underlying code to create a visual representation of that data. A large section of a page is “painted” in the least amount of time possible, and Google considers an LCP time under 2.5 seconds to be good, while over 4 seconds is considered low.
  • The Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) – Have you ever viewed a web page and noticed that the content moved around while loading, shifting up or down as the page loaded? Cumulative Layout Shift is a very annoying problem on many websites, which can ruin the user experience otherwise. This is why Google has made it one of its ranking factors. To be considered fast, a loading time of under 100 milliseconds is acceptable, but anything over 250 milliseconds is unacceptable.

What Is The Impact Of Core Web Vitals On Your Ranking?

A Google ranking metric based on Core Web Vitals will be released in early 2021, which gives businesses and digital marketers a chance to start preparing their sites before they face negative impacts.

Many of the strategies to improve Core Web Vitals will already be familiar to those who already follow best practices for building and maintaining their website because site speed has been an important consideration for users for years. Google has raised the baseline standard by introducing these new guidelines to indicate whether or not your website will be compatible in 2021.
